Subclass 482:

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa

Subclass 482 (the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa – also known as a TSS visa, or TSS 482 visa) enables Australian employers to hire genuinely skilled workers they can’t source in Australia. It means that overseas workers can work in Australia for a nominated employer, providing they hold the relevant skills and work experience to do the work.

The Subclass 482 visa for Australia is an employer nominated visa. This means the employer will need to be an approved sponsor, and have the sponsor nomination approved before the visa application can be lodged. If the employer is already an approved sponsor, the whole process could be completed within a short timeframe.

Streams for the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa

Subclass 482 visas are available via various streams:

short-term-stream
Short-term stream

Enables employers to hire skilled overseas workers when there are labour shortages, and there are no suitably skilled Australian candidates. Occupations must be on the short-term skilled occupations list. Visas are usually issued for two years, though it may be up to four years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies. Hong Kong passport holders can stay for up to five years.

medium-term stream
Medium-term stream

Again, this enables employers to address labour shortages, though in this instance the Subclass 482 visa would be issued for four years (or five years for Hong Kong passport holders).

To qualify for this visa, your occupation would need to be specified – either on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), or the Regional Occupation List (ROL).

This stream is for skilled workers nominated by their employers who have a Labour Agreement. Such Labour Agreements are drawn up between the Australian Government and employers. This stream of Subclass 482 lets you stay in Australia for up to four years (or five years for Hong Kong passport holders) – though this is dependent on the terms outlined in the Labour Agreement.

This is for family members of TSS visa holders who are applying separately for their TSS visa and want to join the primary TSS visa holder in Australia. This enables you to stay in Australia for as long as your visa is valid.
