VisaAide success story

Subclass 461 visa approved in 80 days through the Christmas and New Year period

Moving to another country takes planning, and for one couple living in New Zealand, getting the right visa in place was an important part of preparing for their move to Australia in early 2026.

With one partner a New Zealand citizen, they came to VisaAide for help navigating the Australian visa process and preparing a Subclass 461 New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship Visa application.

Their application was lodged just as the Christmas and New Year period approached, but with the right preparation and prompt responses throughout the process, their visa was approved in just 80 days.

Why they came to us

The couple approached VisaAide on 10 October 2025, with plans to relocate to Australia in early 2026.

With one partner a New Zealand citizen, we identified the Subclass 461 New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship Visa as the appropriate pathway.

Their move was getting closer, so they wanted to make sure the application was prepared properly and lodged as soon as possible.

What stood in their way

Timing was a key concern. Their application would be processed across the Christmas and New Year period, when public holidays and office closures could affect processing times.

There was also a substantial amount of supporting evidence to coordinate, including relationship and identity documents, police checks, and later clarification around the applicant’s identity and name change.

To add to the logistics, some of these requirements needed to be managed while the couple were overseas during the holiday period.

How we helped

VisaAide worked with the couple to prepare a complete application and keep everything moving as efficiently as possible.

We helped compile their relationship evidence, coordinate identity documents and make sure they understood what was required at each stage. We also supported them while they were overseas, including obtaining and translating police checks and providing additional identity and name-change information when requested.

By 29 October 2025, the complete application had been assembled and sent by courier. The Department of Home Affairs confirmed formal lodgement and requested biometrics on 11 November, which the applicant completed promptly.

What happened next

VisaAide continued monitoring the application throughout December and January.

When further information was requested, we responded promptly. Additional identity information was provided, police checks were completed and translated, and the relationship evidence was accepted.

On 30 January 2026, the Subclass 461 visa was approved, just 80 days after formal lodgement.

What the result meant for them

The approval gave the couple certainty ahead of their move to Australia.

Instead of entering the new year still unsure about their immigration position, they had the visa outcome they needed to move forward with their plans together.

The turnaround was particularly welcome given that much of the processing period fell across Christmas and New Year.

What they said

  • “That’s amazing! We are both so happy and excited. Thank you!!!”

What you can take from this

When timing matters, preparation matters too.

Providing complete evidence, responding quickly to requests and keeping track of an application while circumstances change can help prevent avoidable delays.

It’s also worth starting early. If you know a move is coming, getting advice before the deadline is close gives you more time to prepare the right application and deal with anything unexpected.
