Back in 2024, many hoped that key trades—like welding and fabrication—would be added to New Zealand’s Green List. While that update didn’t come then, Immigration New Zealand has now confirmed a significant shift. As of 12 June 2025, 10 new skilled trades have been added to the Green List, offering a clearer path to residence.
That’s great news for skilled workers and employers in these sectors.
From 18 August 2025, more eligible trades workers will have a clearer route to residence after two years of working in a Green List role for an accredited employer.
Green List update: 10 new roles added in 2025
- Metal Fabricator
- Metal Machinist (First Class)
- Fitter (General)
- Fitter and Turner
- Fitter Welder
- Pressure Welder
- Welder
- Panel Beater
- Vehicle Painter
- Paving Plant Operator
These changes will allow New Zealand employers to fill critical gaps in the workforce and offer long-term security for skilled migrant workers already employed in these industries.
At VisaAide, we’re encouraging employers to review their workforce now and identify any workers who may benefit from this update. Not only does this help with staff retention, but it also opens opportunities for smoother long-term planning.
Who qualifies for the Green List residence pathway?
While this Green List expansion is a major opportunity, not everyone in these roles will automatically qualify for residence. To be eligible under the Work to Residence pathway, applicants must:
- Have worked in the listed occupation for at least 24 months
- Be under 55 years old
- Meet health, character, and English language requirements
In addition, each occupation has specific criteria, especially around pay rates.
For example:
- Metal Fabricators, Welders, Fitters, and Machinists must earn at least $43.63 an hour (or $90,750 a year, based on a 40-hour week)*
- Paving Plant Operators, Panel Beaters, and Vehicle Painters must earn at least $38.59 an hour (or $80,267 a year)*
Figures correct as at 18 June 2025.
What this means for employers and skilled trades workers
This Green List update brings real benefits for both employers and migrants working in these essential trades:
- New opportunities for candidates and employers: If you’re hiring or placed in one of these 10 trades, eligible candidates now have a clear route to New Zealand residence after two years.
- Improved long-term planning: Employers can offer skilled migrants a clearer and quicker progression from work to residence—helping with retention and team building.
- Faster settlement for skilled workers: Migrants in these occupations can apply for residence once they’ve met the required criteria, without jumping through extra hoops.
