Australian Visitor Visa Frequently Asked Questions –

How long does it generally take to process Australian Visitor Visas?

In most cases, a decision can be made on ETA (subclass 601) and eVisitor visas (subclass 651) instantly from the time your application has been lodged by VisaAide. However, in some cases ETA visas can take up to 12 hours and sometimes several weeks for eVisitors. Currently, most subclass 600 applications are taking 10 to 30 days from application lodgement to be processed. Please note processing times are at the discretion of the Department of Home Affairs and VisaAide is unable to influence the time frames. In some small cases, processing times for subclass 600 applications can be very lengthy, especially for applications with convictions, health concerns or require security checking.

From early October – end December, processing times tend to stretch – potentially up to 5 or 6 weeks as Christmas gets closer – we definitely recommend early action, particularly for ‘special’ needs cases, where health or criminal convictions may require expect insight.

What are the circumstances where specialist expert knowledge may be required?

Expert knowledge may be required where there are criminal convictions, health concerns or previous adverse immigration history like a prior refused application or exposure (or potential exposure) to a significant health risk to Australia.

What is a condition 8503?

Condition 8503 can be applied to a visa effectively preventing a person to make another application to extend their stay while in Australia. If you have an 8503 condition on your visa, you may need professional advice and guidance on your future options.

How long is an Australian Visitor Visa valid for?

The most common validity would be a multiple entry visa that is valid for 12 months from the date of issue and allows a stay of up to 3 months on each entry. However, this is not guaranteed. The decision on validity and conditions of the visa is made by the Department of Home Affairs and VisaAide has no influence on this.

Is it allowable to work when in Australia on a Visitor Visa?

No. The holder of an ETA, eVisitor or subclass 600 visa is not permitted to work in Australia. If you are intending to gain work while you are in Australia, you will need to discuss your options with us before applying.
