The New Zealand Government has announced significant changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) scheme, set to be rolled out in four stages throughout 2025.
These updates aim to streamline processes for employers and improve opportunities for migrant workers. Here’s a clear breakdown of the changes and what they mean for employers.
From 27 January 2025
Online employer modules no longer required
Accredited employers and Recognised Seasonal Employers (RSE) will no longer need to complete Employment New Zealand’s online training modules or offer paid time for migrants to complete them.
Relaxed requirements for the construction sector
Certain construction sector employers currently required to have 35% of their workforce made up of New Zealanders will see this reduced to 15%. This change acknowledges the sector’s unique challenges in finding skilled workers locally.
From March 2025
Wage thresholds removed for AEWV roles
Employers will no longer need to meet Immigration NZ’s minimum wage thresholds for AEWV roles. However, they must still advertise and offer the market rate for the role and its location. Employers are not required to adjust wages set in existing employment agreements.
Reduced work experience requirement
Migrants applying for AEWVs will only need 2 years of relevant work experience, down from the current 3 years.
Simplified Job Check process
Employers no longer need to provide evidence of engagement with Work and Income. Instead, they will be required to declare that they advertised lower-skilled roles with Work and Income and interviewed any suitable candidates.
Longer AEWV duration for lower-skilled roles
AEWV holders in lower-skilled roles will see their visa duration extended to 3 years, matching the maximum time they can stay in New Zealand on an AEWV. Current AEWV holders with 2-year visas will be eligible to apply for a 1-year extension.
Unchanged income threshold for dependent children
AEWV holders will still need to earn at least NZ$55,844 annually to bring dependent children to New Zealand. This threshold, unchanged since 2019, reflects the minimum financial requirement to support family members.
From April 2025
Interim Visas with work rights
Some work and student visa holders applying for an AEWV will become eligible for an Interim Visa, allowing them to work while their AEWV application is processed. This change is intended to minimise disruptions for workers and employers during the application period.
Mid-2025
Streamlined Job Checks for low-risk employers
Immigration NZ plans to introduce a streamlined Job Check process for low-risk employers, speeding up approvals for those with a strong track record of compliance.
From November 2025
New seasonal worker pathways
Two new visa pathways will be introduced for seasonal workers:
- A 3-year multi-entry visa for experienced seasonal workers.
- A 7-month single-entry visa for lesser-skilled seasonal workers.
The existing temporary seasonal pathways will remain available until these new options are implemented.
What these changes mean for employers
These changes significantly reduce administrative requirements, particularly for businesses in industries that rely heavily on migrant workers. By removing wage thresholds, lowering experience requirements, and simplifying processes, the changes aim to make it easier for employers to navigate the AEWV scheme while ensuring fair pay and employment conditions.
